Special Events Coordinator

Position Description:

Project: Think Different is an empowerment media nonprofit organization that uses the arts and popular culture media to increase the power of voices in civic dialogue and participation to ensure equity and fairness. We use music, film and video as an organizing tool to reach those disengaged and to inspire them to “think differently” about their ability to create positive change in their lives, communities, and society at large.  Project: Think Different's (PTD) messages in music, film and video, fuel empowering beliefs about our ability to create positive social change.

The Media Watch Team consists of 10 diverse teens from throughout Boston who work with the Media Education Organizer to develop and implement curriculum, make decisions about programming and sites, and lead the “Voices of Tomorrow… TODAY!” campaign. As the members of the Media Watch Team are older teens, we are actively aware of the need to prepare them for their roles as adults. In addition to receiving ongoing, sustained, meaningful employment, members of the Media Watch Team have access to job training, mentorship, and education that will enable them to hold decision making careers in media, government, academia, and emerging industries.

The Special Events Coordinator is responsible for working to develop and implement strategies for amplifying the mission of Project: Think Different and the Media Watch Team. The Special Events Coordinator will work with the Program Manager and the Media Education Organizer to support the annual PTD fundraiser in addition to smaller youth driven events. Also, the Special Events Coordinator will work closely with the Public Relations Coordinator to promote events at PTD and will serve as a resource to the other Media Watch Team members, specifically for fundraising or organizing efforts.

Position involves

Build strategic relationships with local venues, artists, and printers for materials

Create schedules and best practices lists for events implementation

Production of a monthly internet television series in collaboration with other MWT members

Assist PTD staff in the development of programs, educational and marketing materials to reach young people

Assist in the development of programs and initiatives that strengthen PTD reach to youths across communities and in schools

Desired Skills/Experience

Knowledge of and involvement in youth programs

Oral and written communications

Must be comfortable with phone and email networking

Public Relations Coordinator

The Public Relations Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all of the media and press relations of the Media Watch Teams ongoing activities. The Public Relations Coordinator works with the Media Education Organizer Coordinators to develop media strategies, write press releases, and call individual media outlets to obtain coverage for ongoing activities.

Position involves

Write press releases and do follow up phone calls to secure press for local events and initiatives

Work with the Media Education Organizer to develop and conduct strategic communication workshops for other youth and community organizations

Represent Project: Think Different in local and national media

Assist PTD staff in the development of programs, educational and marketing materials to reach young people

The Production Coordinator is responsible this year for overseeing the production of solution-oriented messages, created by the Media Watch Team. The Production Coordinator will work with the Media Education Organizer to create a distribution plan and with the Fundraising Coordinator and Special Events Coordinator to hold premieres of the media messages.

Work with Outreach Coordinator to outreach to other youth and community organizations

Develop production plans for Media Watch Team projects

Work with the Massachusetts State Film Office to build internship opportunities for youth

He/She oversees and coordinates all outreach efforts by the Media Watch Team, specifically to avoid overlap of outreach among the Legislative, Special Events, Education, and Organizing branches of the Media Watch Team work.

He/She works with the Media Education Organizer to identify upcoming conferences and to plan workshops for disseminating information and action plans to conference participants.

The Board Liaison reports youth concerns to the Board and keeps the Media Watch Team updated on Board meetings and initiatives, and will also work with the Program Manager to do strategic board development.

The Action Organizer is responsible for developing and implementing grassroots organizing strategies based on the ongoing work and initiatives of PTD and the Media Watch Team. He/She works with the Electronic Community Media Specialist to maintain functionality of the Action Alert system, and oversees the Team’s ongoing participation in the system. Additionally, the Action Organizer works closely with the Legislative Liaison to identify policies that the Media Watch Team should be taking action on.
